Backstory - The story so far
Offstage "Animation in New Media"
It all started in spring 2000 in Leipzig. From quite different directions we had received hints, that of late cartoons were not only exhibited in the cinema and on television but also on the World Wide Web. We were told about special frog-cocktails (Frog in a Blender) and suspended "Angry Kids" in Christmas trees.
Our curiosity being aroused, we decided to go into the matter and organized a course at Leipzig university in which first of all geeks, film freaks and media researchers had to coordinate their lingo and their (very different) expectations. Then, - full of pioneer spirit - the students started to track down websites with animations and to comment them in our archive. Since then, this course has been held four times. Some participants have stayed on since those early days, others have produced their own flash movies, which can be watched in our showroom.
From the very start all results have been presented at this website, since we wanted to open this exciting and neglected field of research to the public. At our site you will find short comments of links as well as more detailed analysis of important websites, presentations of theoretical topics such as classification model for webtoons, business models of animation sites, how to measure user activities or advertizing on the internet - and a forum for discussion.
Animation on the internet is situated in the area of art, technology, society and economy. Among other things, we are fascinated by the effects of the technological restriction on the aesthetics of webtoons, the manifold venues, the general changes, which movies, that have been produced for the World Wide Web, are liable to and the highly different attempts, to make a profit with animation on the internet.
Meanwhile, we have presented different facets of the varied topic many times, for instance
- at several media conferences, for instance, the 14th annual conference of the Society of Animation Studies in Glendale, California;
- at conferences primary oriented towards technology and development oriented such as the Shockwards;
- at film festivals, for instance the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film;
- at netculture events, for instance, "experiment future" that was streamed live from the Centre for art and media technology, Karlsruhe, in about 20 German cinemas;
- on television, for instance in the short film magazine "Kurzschluss" at the German/French culture channel ARTE and in the academic series "media forum" at the German public channel SWR as well as several times on the radio
- and of course in different academic journals and anthologies.
